  • When green tea is manufactured, it is not allowed to oxidize. The leaves are dried very quickly either in a pan or an oven to dehydrate them and then they are stored. This process retains the polyphenols catechins and the flavanoids which make drinking green tea a healthy and beneficial option. However green tea possesses a grassy taste and combined with lemon makes the taste refreshing and delicious.

Green tea’s antioxidants may interfere with the growth of bladder, breast, lung, stomach, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers; prevent clogging of the arteries, burn fat, counteract oxidative stress on the brain, reduce risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, reduce risk of stroke, and improve cholesterol levels.

According to Purdue University, lemon boosts the health benefits of green tea, as citrus juice makes green tea’s antioxidants more readily available for your body. Catechins prefer an acidic rather than alkaline environment. As the tea passes from your stomach â€?acidic â€?to the increasingly alkaline environment of your small intestine, the catechins are broken down. Your body can absorb up to six times more catechins that it would otherwise by combining lemon juice with your green tea. Lemon juice also reduces the effect of certain compounds in green tea that can restrict your ability to absorb iron from foods.

Lemongrass contains a number of volatile oils, including one called citral that's a mixture of several similar compounds. Information from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center indicates that citral acts as an antioxidant that can help protect your cells from damage by free radicals. Research published in the March 2003 issue of "Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications" found that citral acts by activating an enzyme, glutathione S-transferase, that detoxifies free radicals and helps your body rid itself of them. Sloan-Kettering also indicates that extracts of lemongrass have anti-microbial properties, helping prevent or slow the growth of bacteria and fungi. A study published in the January 2012 issue of "Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice" found that an oil extract from lemongrass inhibited growth of streptococcus bacteria in the laboratory, while research in the March 2009 issue of "Phytomedicine" studied the effectiveness of a lemongrass infusion in human subjects with human immunodeficiency virus who had an oral fungal infection called thrush. Researchers found that an oral rinse administered three times daily was more effective than gentian violet, an anti-fungal medication.
