  • Chamomile tea, a traditional drink mild enough for small children in small quantities, is nonetheless powerful enough to treat a number of maladies, from insomnia to stomach pain. The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC)notes that most people turn to chamomile tea for its nerve-soothing and sedative qualities. While chamomile¡¯s effectiveness in humans hasn't been scientifically proven, animal studies confirm that small amounts seem to relieve anxiety, while larger quantities aid sleep. UMMC suggests drinking 3 to 4 cups of chamomile tea each day for both sleeplessness and anxiety. The UMMC states pregnant and nursing women should not consume the tea, which could increase the risk of miscarriage. >Many migraine sufferers rely on chamomile to help ease headache pain and provide relaxation. It is also effective in relieving sore muscles and joint pains. Chamomile works on decreasing pain and swelling and interestingly enough, helps fight tooth decay.

Rooibos tea is extraordinarily rich in a diverse array of antioxidants, including two polyphenols called aspalathin (which is unique to rooibos) and nothofagin (which is only found in rooibos and the New Zealand red beech). These amazing substances protect our bodies from the cell-damaging effects of free radicals, thereby guarding us from a host of serious degenerative diseases such as macular degeneration, Parkinson's disease and various types of cancer. In fact, rooibos tea is bursting with so many cancer-fighting compounds (including flavanones, flavones, and flavanols) that the Cancer Association of South Africa, after eight years of research, has officially recognized it as a leading source of natural anti-cancer chemicals.

Aniseed is used for upset stomach, intestinal gas, ¡°runny nose,¡± and as an expectorant to increase productive cough, as a diuretic to increase urine flow, and as an appetite stimulant. Women use anise to increase milk flow when nursing, start menstruation, treat menstrual discomfort or pain, ease childbirth, and increase sex drive. Men use anise to treat symptoms of ¡°male menopause.¡± Other uses include treatment of seizures, nicotine dependence, trouble sleeping (insomnia), asthma, and constipation.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, Cinnamon is used to help treat muscle spasms, vomiting, diarrhea, infections, the common cold, loss of appetite, and erectile dysfunction (ED). Cinnamon may lower blood sugar in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, according to Diabetes UK. According to the National Institutes of Health, cinnamaldehyde – a chemical found in Cassia cinnamon – can help fight against bacterial and fungal infections. Tel Aviv University researchers discovered that cinnamon may help prevent Alzheimer's disease. Cinnamon may help stop the destructive process of multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a neurological scientist at Rush University Medical Center.

Lemon Verbena promotes overall nervous system health and in tea form combats both depression and the ill effects of stress. In a report about botanical ingredients for beverages, German researcher Joerg Gruenwald pointed to lemon verbena's effectiveness as an aid to digestion. Gruenwald's article, published in a 2009 issue of "Clinics in Dermatology," indicates that lemon verbena tea is particularly effective in relieving digestive tract spasms, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Linden flower tea has been traditionally used to sooth nerves and treat anxiety-related health problems. It has anti-inflammatory properties and was also traditionally used to treat digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. "Nursing Herbal Medicine Handbook" states that linden tea is also used to treat headaches and incontinence, which is an inability to control urine output.

People have used passion flower traditionally to treat anxiety, and continue to do so today. A study published in the October 2001 issue of the "Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics" found that passion flower was as effective as the prescription medication oxazepam for treating generalized anxiety disorder.
